International Experimental Film & Video FestivalOctober 15-20, 2009, Nuovo Cinema Aquila, RomeFishEye is an international festival focusing on all forms of audiovisual art and, in particular, on the experimental and non-fictional languages that currently represent the most interesting field for the application of new technologies.
FishEye (the name is inspired by a particular camera lens producing wide-angle deformations) is one of the events of Rome International Film Festival, running from October 15 through October 23.
Conceived and directed by Bruno Di Marino, a moving image philosopher and expert of experimental audiovisual art, FishEye is produced by Nuovo Cinema Aquila, a movie theatre located in the Pigneto district in Rome, a benchmark for high quality cultural events. FishEye is organized in collaboration with Rome City Council Department for Cultural Policies, and RaroVideo label.
This year we are celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the first Manifesto of Futurism and, therefore, FishEye ideally wants to connect, in its beginning, to this movement that has shaken the approach to the art in all its forms, into a synaesthetic logic that is very topical, today more than ever.
The very idea of movement, speed and simultaneity – which is the basis for many theories and works of the Futurists – and the attention they gave to cinema, as a looking-forward form of expression and the only one capable to free itself from literature and theater in order to catch painting and music - has laid the foundation for the production of experimental movies that, since the mid ‘10 until today, changed the technological, cultural and aesthetic perception.
FishEye aims not to be a festival for a few enthusiasts. Its ambition is to present to a wider audience the most innovative audio-visual experiences in the framework of video art, music video clips, animation, web, installations (including interactive ones), and so on, by screening the artworks but also mainly through the meeting with authors of international level, to whom tribute will be paid year after year. The festival will also present several premieres, including international and national ones.
There are many events in Italy committed to single audiovisual experimental forms of art, mainly in short footage: videoart, animation, web art, videoclip; neverthless there isn’t an event that aims to explore in a systematic way these different "moving image genres", treating them as very closely related, as elements of a story that has its roots in pre-cinema age and arrives to digital.
In their conceptual meaning, the notions of "cinema" and "video" are nowadays obsolete and one simply have to start talking about "moving image". At the same time the narration is no longer a macrogenre, but an option among many others mixing in works that include now a more creative, and more documentary-based approach.
